A person or company needs the Import Export Code, or IEC, which is a 10-digit code, to import or export products or services. The Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India, is responsible for issuing this code. There is no need to renew this code because its validity is permanent. After all necessary adjustments are made to the papers and they are submitted, this code is generated in between five and fifteen working days.

This code may be issued either in your name or the name of your business. Once issued, it is valid throughout all of its branches, factories, divisions, and units.
