The governing law for intestate succession (dying without a Will) in India varies by religion and personal law: Hindus (including Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists) are governed by the Hindu Succession Act, 1956; Muslims by Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937; Christians and Parsis by the Indian Succession Act, 1925.
